What a way to meet new people – stepping out and seeing the bees! City Square House offers four lucky people the chance to go visit the hives that are up on the roof of the building! We met at the reception desk and met up with the Bee Keeper Tom. He looks after multiple hives all over Leeds/Bradford/Castleford. Making our way up to the top of the building, climbed across the roof to find the two hives that are kept away in the corner. We got dressed up and Tom told us that the bees fly up to three-mile radius of their hive to collect the pollen to bring back home.

Tom pulled apart one of the hives – he does this weekly to make sure that they all still have enough room in there. Each slat is removeable so that he can check the health of the bees and how many babies are in there, and how much honey is being made. There is hope that jars of honey will be available around September!

If you look closer you can see the Queen of the hive with the white spot.

It was such a good experience and we all would recommend you putting your name down for the opportunity. Tom explains so much, and you can learn lots from the hour – and maybe even taste the produce!
